TORONTO (CP) - Canadian servicemen and women, past and present, took to the streets of the nation's largest city in a colourful display of pageantry Sunday as part of afternoon of festivities celebrating Canada's veterans.

About 500 veterans marched alongside 1,000 Canadian military personnel in one Toronto's largest-ever military parades, culminating in the unveiling of a permanent tribute to Canadian veterans who served both in war and in peacetime.

As many as 1,500 veterans gathered with military, family members and spectators for the unveiling of the Veterans' Memorial, on the front lawn of the Ontario legislature, as military jets zoomed overhead to the delight and cheers of the crowd.

"It may seem strange to talk about love when we speak of war, but only love can explain the depth of your sacrifice," said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty in his salute to the veterans.

"Your hope for our world created a world full of hope."

The 30-metre-long granite wall is etched with scenes from Canada's military history, featuring images up to and including the current Afghan mission, which started in 2002.

The monument is the first addition to the grounds of Queen's Park in 66 years.

"Over the years, you have kept faith with your lost comrades-in-arms. Their spirit stands shoulder to shoulder with you here today," said Ontario Lt.-Gov. James Bartleman.

"In poignant words and images, this monument tells your story and theirs. May it keep the flame of gratitude alive in our hearts for years to come." MORE
